1. Know your why. If you have a compelling reason to switch to a paleo lifestyle, it will help you stay on track. Are you battling an autoimmune condition? Do you want to feel more energetic so you can play with your kids or grandkids? Are you trying to shed some stubborn pounds? Paleo helps with all of these issues.
2. Find a partner. If you have a spouse and kids, convert them to this diet as well. Parents who try to cook separate meals for their family are more likely to succumb to both exhaustion and temptation.
3. Clean out your pantry. Ditch all the foods that aren’t paleo-compliant. Resist the urge to go on one last binge. It’ll make the transition harder. Instead, find a neighbour or co-worker you dislike intensely and then hand off all the junk to them.
4. Create meal plans and grocery lists. You should know in advance everything you can eat (generally, the fresh food around the edges of the grocery store) and keep plenty of it in stock. If you’re going out to eat at a restaurant, make sure you check the menu in advance, so you’ll be able to see if there are paleo-compliant dishes available. Most restaurants will have at least a couple, or you can make substitutions.
START WITH 45 DAYS
If you’re a sugarholic, the idea of ditching this magical substance indefinitely may cause a twinge of panic. For addicts in recovery, they live by the mantra of “one day at a time.” If you’re worried about starting a paleo diet and your chances of success, adopt a philosophy similar to this one. Tell yourself to stick it out for 45 days.
This is enough time for the gluten-laden toxins to exit your body and more than enough time for you to start seeing results like firmer skin, weight loss, more energy, and even an enhanced mood. Then after 45 days, you can consider adding a few items back into your diet to see how you react.
A helpful tip we recommend is to plan a cheat meal for day 46, but only if you manage to stay clean for the full 45 days. Make reservations at your favourite Italian restaurant or plan a date night at a dessert bar. Have something to look forward to. But, don’t be surprised, if, on day 46, you feel so much better about what you’re putting in your body that you don’t want to pollute it with pasta or cake.
