If purchasing a formula powder is the preferred way to go, always ensure it's certified organic, non-GMO, and free of soy and brown rice syrup (here's why). Despite the challenges of finding a store-bought formula that doesn't contain any icky additives, the organic varieties far outweigh the conventional ones. Using filtered water will also help minimize contaminants in formula.
While raw, organic whole milk from grass-fed cows has been clouded in controversy, it has a longstanding following in the lactation community. Pasteurized (heat-treated) milk has its fair share of issues when it comes to loss of enzymes, poor vitamin and mineral absorption, allergies and links to illness outbreaks. To avoid using milk altogether, especially if baby is showing early signs of allergies, consider a dairy-free liver-based formula recipe.
For an emergency formula - without the raw milk - here's a fortified dairy recipe adapted from the Weston A. Price Foundation:
1 cup organic milk-based powdered formula*29 ounces filtered water (3 5/8 cups)1 large egg yolk from an organic egg, cooked 3 1/2 minutes (remove and discard the egg white)1/2 teaspoon unflavored high-vitamin or high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil or 1 teaspoon regular cod liver oil (like Blue Ice or Green Pasture brand)
Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend thoroughly.Place 6-8 ounces in a clean glass bottle. (store the rest in a clean glass jar in the refrigerator for the next feedings.)Attach a clean nipple to the bottle and set in a pan of simmering water until formula is warm but not hot to the touch, shake well and feed to baby. Never heat formula in a microwave oven.
