How to stick to your health goals you set for 2017.

Hello, 2017!

There is something so special about a new year. It's a time to reinvent yourself and conquer some goals that you have been waiting for. It's also a great time to get back on the healthy train after the holidays. All that wine, stuffing, pie and probably more wine has you saying, enough! If you have set some goals to get your health back on track, we have our top 5 tips to help you see them through to completion.

  1. Break down your goal into smaller size chunks and time frame - A lot of people have picked a goal such as "I want to lose 30 lbs this year," or "I am going to run a marathon this year." Your goal needs to be broken down into chunks. A lot happens psychology wise when you meet a mini-goal. For example, your goal is to lose 30 lbs in a year. Take out your calendar and mark out how much weight you want to lose by March, July, Sept, etc. This is a much easier pill to swallow when you can tell yourself, "I only need to lose 5lbs in 6 weeks. Meet that mini goal, and move onto the next. Before you know it, those 30lbs will be gone before the year is over.
  1. Schedule the goal into your calendar - Just the same as you have done with work, dinner with friends or perhaps your kid's hockey practice, schedule it in.  You know that saying your grade 4 teacher piped in your ear after failing to produce your book summary in time? "If we fail to plan, we plan to fail." Pull out your calendar and pencil it in!
  1. Make it the first thing you do in your day - Now that you have scheduled in your goal to your weekly calendar, move it up to be the first thing you do in your day. Life gets busy, and other people, commitments or general stresses will try and move in on your time. If you are seriously committed to your 2017 goals, then it needs to become a must, and non-negotiable. While it has taken me years, I am now proud to say I am 6 am'er gym rat! This is a very special time of the day for me and I protect it like no other. It's a lot easier to say no to late nights when you know you have a 6 am commitment in the morning. An even better approach is to sign up for a specific class. Be it yoga, spinning, CrossFit or a personal trainer, there is nothing worse than disappointing your coach because you wanted to sleep in. You also have far greater will power first thing in the day. Pack your bags, prep your food, fill your water bottle, the night before. Get up, get out and just get there. The rest will take care of itself, trust me.
  1. Consistency is key - If your goal is to eat cleaner this year and you know you are going to be doing a lot of cooking, pick a shopping day and a prep day. Stick to it, and don't change it. My best suggestion is to shop on Saturday, and prep on Sunday. Your prep day on Sunday is going to be a big day of cooking, (as you know this, because it's in your planner) so you must pass on other plans friends and family will ask of you. If you start moving your days around to accommodate other plans, you could start moving down a very slippery slope. Stick to your guns, remind yourself why you chose this goal in the first place and hold that special day and time close. It's a special time, to keep you on track of the new you that 2017 is going to bring.
  2. Tell the world - Announce to your friends, your family, and co-workers about the improvements you are making for yourself. You may feel silly, and you may get a few silly looks. Don't be fearful as to the judgments you may receive. What people judge in others, they judge in themselves. Secretly, these people wish that they could be doing the same. Telling the world will help keep you accountable and sets the boundaries for future invites. If perhaps your goal is to follow a Paleo protocol this year, telling your peers now makes it much less awkward then when you arrive for dinner and you must pass on the homemade lasagna they made from scratch.

Becoming a better version of you is going to hard. There will be days (guaranteed) that you will want to quit. Going back to old habits is easy. Remind yourself this, a lot! Right now, you are pumped to crush 2017, and that is awesome!
