We are so proud of our Caveman Grocer sponsored athlete, Austin Evans. This past weekend, Austin competed at the Okanagan Valley Throwdown and received a 4th place overall finish for the weekend, and we couldn't be prouder!
I have had the privilege of watching Austin over the past few years develop into an amazing CrossFit athlete. Austin spent the majority of his youth playing high-level hockey. About a year and a half ago, Austin made the decision to spend his time and efforts on becoming a competitive CrossFit athlete.
Knowing Austin personally and seeing his naturally skilled talents work ethics and enthusiasm for the sport, we know he would go far. I approached Austin with an idea to let us fuel him, to help him realize his dream of one day competing at the CrossFit Games. Obviously, free food is an offer most would not turn down!
Every week, we drop off 7 meals to Opus Athletics, where Austin coaches and trains. The meals he receives are the same that you receive each week, but this past weekend was a little different. Austin told us that he would be competing against the top male CrossFit competitors in the NorthWest of North America. We knew we had to really make sure he was properly fuelled for the entire weekend.
We grilled grass fed beef, grilled free range chicken breast, roasted potatoes, roasted yams, roasted bell peppers, and cauliflower. The total weight was well over a few kgs of food!
We had a quick chat with Austin this morning to see how the event went and he thanked us a lot for the food! He said there is so much that goes into competing and the food is the last thing you want to have to think about and we made it super simple for him. Surprisingly enough, he ate all of the food! Having healthy, ready-made meals made it easier to focus the competition.
For those unfamiliar with CrossFit competitions, it's a chance for athletes to show their hard work they have been putting it in at their local box. There are no official rules, workouts or movements that happen at every competition, depending on the organizers is how the competition will happen. It can happen in one day, or over a couple of days. It usually consists of testing the athlete across all spectrums of strength, aerobic and anaerobic capacities and sometimes all in one workout.
I asked Austin what was his favourite workout from the weekend, and surprisingly enough he said it was double Fran. This workout is usually done for time (complete as quickly as possible), and complete 21 thrusters, then 21 pullups, 15 thrusters, then 15 pullups, 9 thrusters and 9 pullups, but he did this twice, in the same workout! The weight on the bar, 95lbs! To top it off, he crushed the workout too. He said how awesome it was to know that he could hang with some of the top Crossfit Competitors in the NorthWest region. His 4th place overall finish has given him a boost of confidence that his goal of competing in this year's CrossFit games NorthWest regional is a very strong possibility!
I wasn't surprised when Austin told me that he was extremely humbled to the number of people who were telling him how inspiring he was. Austin said, "I'm just doing what I love, which is just exercising for time, it's crazy to think I inspire someone for doing just that." Frankly, we are not surprised at all. We didn't just choose to sponsor him as an athlete because of his ability to perform at CrossFit, but it was his work ethic, commitment to the community and the effort his puts forth as a Coach too.
We're so very proud of you Austin! Great work this past weekend. We are very excited to see what 2017 brings for you!
